The Construction of our Generator Sets

Franconi Power Systems carries out all design and manufacturing internally of all the mechanical engineering work which is required for final assembly of the generator set.

This enables us to resolve all the problems associated with compliance with the most recent legal regulations pertaining to noise, safety and operation.

Base GenSets for Interior Use

The base version for interior use is the most inexpensive, suitable for a fixed internal installation within a closed room; the generator set illustrated is set up on a base made of electrically welded steel profile.

• Technical manufacturing details

  The fuel tank has a capacity such as to guarantee an adequate running time for the generator set; suitably sized vibration absorbing bushes are fitted between the unit and the base.
  Among the numerous variants available it is possible to:

  • locate the radiator for cooling the engine remotely from the unit, ensuring cooling by means of an electric fan.
  • provide systems for partial soundproofing the generator and soundproofing the entire room
  • to provide generators in special versions for specific usage and installation needs, such as the introduction or expulsion of ventilating air or the discharging of exhaust fumes.

Generator Sets with Protective Housings

The version with a protective housing is suitable both for exterior installation, since it is protected from the weather, and for installation within a closed room and when it is desired to separate the generator from the surrounding environment, ensuring that non-authorised personnel do not carry out work on it or accidentally come into contact with it.
 

• Technical manufacturing details

  The genset’s structure is as described for the base version, with the variation of being protected by a housing of 15 to 20/10 gauge folded pressed sheet steel, welded electrically and then painted.

  The housing is equipped with special hatches with doors which provide access to the genset for any necessary maintenance or repair; the apertures to allow entry and exit of air are fitted with rain-proof grilles and protective meshing; among the numerous variants available it is possible to manufacture special structures such as those which are dismantlable or self-supporting or with dimensions, finishes and paint specified by the client (the standard colour is RAL 5005 blue).

  In practice, in almost all applications, the protective housing is constructed as described above, is supplied complete with soundproofing which can guarantee a reduced noise level depending on the different demands of the surrounding environment; normally the soundproofed housing is sized to obtain a residual noise level of 70, 65 or 55 dB(A), measured at a distance of 7 m in a free field in compliance with current legislation; in this instance the housing is lined internally with class “0” fireproof mineral fibre panels protected by a layer of glass fibre performing the dual role of preventing the sound-absorbing material from disintegrating or from absorbing oil or fuel vapour; everything is held in place by perforated or microstretched sheets; the apertures for the entry and exit of air are fitted with diaphragm silencers for sound-proofing.

High Power Generator Sets

In the case of high power generator sets or an installation composed of two or more generator sets or of a generator set with ancillary equipment such as a UPS, transformers, electrical distribution panels, etc., sound insulated containers with ISO standard or bespoke sizes can be built.
The generator sets for marine applications produced by Franconi Power Systems, in addition, of course, to being constructed and homologated in compliance with what is laid down in the Ships’ Registers, are noteworthy for the particular attention paid to:
the containment of weight, often demanded by the client, achieved by both the special design of the steel mechanical engineering, and through the use, where possible, of components made of properly protected duraluminium and peraluman, and the application of special surface treatment processes and coating with paints which are highly resistant to damp, salty environments; some components are made of stainless steel.
